Captain America #180, published in December 1974 When Rogers learns that the commander of the terrorist group known as the Secret Empire is a high level government official—who is strongly implied to be the then-President of the United States, Richard Nixon—he gets disillusioned with the American government. Rogers then makes the decision to give up being Captain America since he no longer has faith in the country’s position and feels unable to serve it after this most recent finding. Rogers, however, is forced to acknowledge that he cannot give up a life of heroism after a meeting with Hawkeye (posing as the Golden Archer). As a result, he adopts the name “Nomad,” which means “man without a country,” and dons a new outfit of dark blue and yellow with no patriotic symbols.
